After a six-hour drive, a ten-hour flight then followed by a shorter one-hour flight – we arrived in Blenheim, New Zealand. For the most part we were looking forward to getting settled, fed and right to bed. Day one was entirely consumed with travel, check-in and dinner.
六時間の運転を成田空港まで、十時間の飛行、そして一時間の国内線の後、ニュージーランド・ブレンハイム市という街に着きました。ようやくの到着の後、少しだけホテルの周辺を歩き、さすがに食事の後は、すぐに寝たくなっていた。こうして一日目はすんだ。
On our second day in Blenheim, though it may have been wiser to spend the early part of the day in the theatre, our hosts had generously prepared for us a muscle harvesting experience, cruising through the northern sounds to a nice sunny spot where clam fisheries surrounded the shore lines. We were fed several rounds of freshly caught and boiled clams with a variety of sauces and reveled the delicious flavours as we cast the shells back into the water. It was nice to have this moment to see some of the natural sites as our time in New Zealand was short and largely occupied in the theatres.
ブレンハイム市での２日目の午前中はなんと、周辺の名物「グリーン・クラム」を近くにある入江の養殖場で見学して船上で取り立てのものを味わう体験の予定が入っていた。朝の高い汐入で出港して、大変美しいニュージーランドの自然を満喫しながら養殖場まで渡航した。養殖場に着いたら、「グリーン・クラム」のお昼だった。腹一杯以上になるまで様々なソースを試しながら、口に新鮮な貝の身をプチュプチュ噛み、貝殻だけを海に投げ返して、朝を送った。どんなソースをつけても、いや、そのままでも十分美味しかった。やっぱり取り立てのクラムを蒸しただけで、うまいものだ。舞台での準備の時間が欲しいものだったが、とてもハードなスケジュールの中、皆さんと一緒にこの朝の観光体験はあって嬉しいものだった。空港、ホテルと舞台だけ見て来ていれば、どこに行ったかの話にはならなかったし、この一時だけ、ニュージーランドの山と海の境目で海風を浴び、チームと楽しむとても貴重な思い出になった。
When lunch was finished, we returned by bus to the hotel to gather our things and head to the theatre – the auditorium of a local boy’s college. There we spent the first part of the day setting the instruments on the stage, rehearsing and working through the motions.
船でのお昼が終わると入江に戻り、そのままバスに乗ってホテルに帰った。舞台で必要な荷物をとって、会場に向かった。残った時間で舞台のセットアップ、掃除、楽器の準備など、いわゆる搬入に取り組んだ。舞台は午後７時３０分からだったので、準備が終わる午後３時ごろでは、実際に最初から最後まで全曲を流す時間はギリギリだった。
I would be remised if I failed to mention that Otari Daiko did not bring all its own instruments. In fact, we were joined by the worlds ‘southern-most taiko group’ Ō-taiko od Dunedin. Through a long series of discussions, it was agreed that Otari Daiko could rent the use of Ō-taiko’s inventory of taiko and that during the second half of the performance, Ō-taiko would perform a set as well. The journey for the Dunedin group was nine hours by car and Otari daiko was very fortunate to have the assistance of Ō-taiko, for without their drums it is likely that the cost to carry their own inventory would have proved prohibitive.
ここで一言、我らが演奏で使った楽器の大半を提供してくれた「逢太鼓」（O-taiko）という、世界でもっとも南の位置にあることを誇る和太鼓グループを紹介しなければ、失礼にあたる。デュニーデン市という町から、我らの舞台が行われるブレンハイム市まで車で九時間をかけて太鼓を運んでくださった。おかげさまで今回の演奏で１２名の出演者を出す小谷太鼓に太鼓の数が足りたし、我らのセットの途中で３０分の出演もしてくださった。
Rehearsal time was limited and though we would only have met Ō-taiko’s members a few hours before, the curtain was to open at 7:30pm. Thus, with only a quick run through of a collaborative piece by both groups and a very tight run through overall, we found ourselves readying for the performance as the sun set outside. Autumn was dawning in Otari village – in New Zealand, though similar in temperature, it was the beginning of spring and there was a distinct chill in the air as the sun set.
限られたリハーサルの時間だったが、逢太鼓のチームとちゃんと挨拶して一緒に舞台で太鼓を叩く時間はわずか３０分しかなかった。こうしてバタバタの準備が終わると思わんがうちに７時３０分に近付こうとしていた。春だったニュージーランドの日の入りの時間だったが、眺める暇もなく着替えに入った。小谷村では秋だった一方、ここは春だった。この旬、ほぼ同じ気温だったと思う。ちょうど演奏が始まろうとする時は日の入りであったが、確かに涼しくなっていた。
The first night’s performance was well received by all and the coordinators and Otari village’s mayor (who had joined us for the event) all reported that the audiences were very excited over intermission. At the end of the night, alongside the members of Otari daiko, I stood outside and greeted the audience members as they departed for home and we received some very warm words and excited exaltations to return soon.
一日目の公演は、観客の反応もよく、休憩時間でのフィードバックは大変良かったと言われている。一緒に来ていた小谷村の村長と議員の方も、これらのコメントをたくさんいただき、喜んでいたとのことだった。演奏が終わると、小谷太鼓のメンバーと一緒に出口で並び、お客様を見送ったけれど、暖かいコメントをたくさんいただき、「また来なさい」という嬉しいお言葉もいただいた。
Despite the obstacles of playing on a foreign stage with unpredictable sound and lighting, the performance was truly a pleasure to be a part of. Otari daiko as a performing group have a gift for grabbing the affections of their audience and this was no exception. If music is a universal language, so to is the dynamism of a good performance that courageously engages an audience.
初めていく外国での現場の音響や照明の不規則な環境についた日で準備して演奏するというのは、いつもバタバタするものでしょうけど、演奏そのものは大変楽しかった。小谷太鼓の元気な皆様と一緒の演奏はまさに楽しいものだった。何よりは、この小谷太鼓はお客様の心を掴むエネルギーがあって、一緒に演奏すると楽しいものである。音楽は世界共通な言語と言われているが、今回の演奏でもわかったのは、やっぱり音楽だけではなく、人の心を掴む力というのは国境を越えるものでもある。
